Wild BC sablefish has more omega-3s than most salmon. Here’s why that matters.
When most people think about healthy seafood, they think about salmon. And salmon deserves the reputation. It’s rich in protein, loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, and widely recognized as one of the healthiest foods you can eat.
But there’s another fish quietly sitting in the background that outperforms salmon in several important ways while somehow remaining relatively unknown outside chef circles. That fish is sablefish.
Also known as black cod, though it’s neither a cod nor particularly black. Just one of those names that stuck.
For decades, sablefish has been one of the most prized fish in high-end restaurants, especially in Japanese and fine dining cuisine. If you’ve heard of Nobu’s famous miso black cod, you’ve already encountered sablefish. What most people don’t realize is that this rich, buttery luxury fish may also be one of the healthiest proteins in the ocean. It may also be one of the most underrated healthy seafood choices available in Canada.
Why Omega-3s Matter So Much
Omega-3 fatty acids are one of the main reasons oily cold-water fish have such a strong reputation for supporting heart and brain health. Specifically, two omega-3s, EPA and DHA, have been widely associated with cardiovascular health, cognitive function, inflammation reduction, and overall wellness. Health Canada recommends eating fish regularly as part of a healthy diet, particularly species rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
Most people associate omega-3s with salmon. Fair enough. But wild BC sablefish actually contains even higher concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids than salmon. And that surprises almost everyone.
The reason is biological. Sablefish live deep in the cold waters of the North Pacific, often at depths exceeding 1,000 feet. In that environment, fat becomes critical for insulation and energy storage. That natural oil content is what gives sablefish its extraordinary texture and nutritional density. It’s also why chefs love it.
The Rare Fish That Is Both Healthy and Luxurious
Usually healthy food feels like a compromise. Luxury food rarely feels healthy. Sablefish somehow manages to be both.
Its flesh is rich, silky, and buttery, separating into large pearlescent flakes when cooked. The texture is often compared to Chilean sea bass or even Wagyu beef because of how soft and luxurious it feels. And yet beneath all that indulgence is:
- exceptionally high-quality protein
- exceptionally high omega-3 content
- vitamin B12
- selenium
- magnesium
- and vitamin D
This is one of the few foods that comfortably exists at the intersection of health, indulgence, convenience, and genuinely exceptional flavour. That combination is rare.
The Cooking Advantage Nobody Talks About
Here’s something that never appears on a nutrition label but matters enormously in real life: sablefish is almost impossible to ruin. Most white fish is unforgiving. Leave it in the oven slightly too long and it turns dry, chewy, and disappointing.
Sablefish behaves differently. Its natural oils keep the flesh moist and forgiving even under relatively high heat. Bake it, grill it, pan-sear it, or throw it on the barbecue – it remains silky and rich.
This is one of the reasons that people who don’t feel confident cooking seafood quickly understand why chefs love it so much. Simple salt, pepper, lemon, and butter is usually enough. The fish does the rest.
Wild BC Sablefish Is Different
Wild BC sablefish is sustainably harvested from the deep cold waters of the North Pacific using longline methods that target individual fish rather than dragging nets across the seafloor. The fishery is carefully managed under quota systems designed to support long-term sustainability and healthy stocks. Our sablefish is handled carefully from harvest onward, then frozen at peak freshness to preserve both texture and nutritional quality. Proper freezing is not a compromise and retains quality better than fresh fish that may have spent days moving through conventional supply chains.
A Better Kind of Healthy Protein
People spend enormous amounts of money chasing health through protein powders, supplements, fish oil capsules, and functional drinks. Meanwhile, one of the healthiest and most delicious proteins in the world has been sitting quietly in the ocean the entire time. No blender required.
Sablefish isn’t just nutritious. It’s deeply satisfying to eat, easy to prepare, freezer friendly, and genuinely luxurious. That’s a rare combination and probably one reason people who discover sablefish tend to become lifelong fans.
